The Women’s College Community Committee coordinates philanthropic activity throughout the college. This means that not only do we support a few main charitable organisations, but assist in facilitating a number of smaller student-run projects. Each member has the chance to focus and bring attention to their own social passions. Organisations this year have largely been sourced throughout the greater Redfern area such as the Women’s and Girls Emergency Centre.
Our main fundraiser is the highly popular cake auction, where college members bake cakes that we auction off at the end of formal dinner. This year Community committee raised a record breaking amount of over $2000. This is used to fund activities for the rest of the year. The breadth of organisations we support means that everyone has a chance to get involved in something they love; whether this be selling charity chocolates, participating in the Vinnies Sleepout, or volunteering for the Community Dog Day.
We have a Facebook page where we like to facilitate discussion about issues we see in the media, and post links to various organisations. Charity committee is always looking for new members who have a passion to make change in the world, as it is said; alone we can do so little, but together, we can do so much!
